What Is Silicosis?
Silicosis is a disease of the lungs which is caused by the inhalation of dust containing Silica (also referred to as Respirable Crystalline Silica, or RCS).
Silicon is a non-metallic element which is found throughout the world. It is second only to Oxygen as the most abundant element within the Earth’s crust and has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians for beads and decoration, along with being used in mortar for building dwellings since ancient times. The name Silicon is derived from the Latin silex or silicis which means ‘flint’ or ‘hard stone’, and in its pure form is too reactive to be found in nature; however when it is combined with oxygen it becomes Silicon Dioxide – more commonly known as Silica. This is found in practically all rocks as well as in sand, clay and soil.
Even the Greeks and Romans were aware of the dangers caused by Silica dust and it has been recognised as causing breathing problems for miners since the 18th century, but as industrialisation has led to the increase of powered tools and larger-scale production and mining techniques, so the amount of dust produced has increased.
When rocks containing silica are mined or cut, a very fine dust is released that can easily be inhaled unless suitable protection is in place. Once these tiny particles reach the lungs they can embed themselves in the alveolar sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide gases are interchanged. The particles are too small for the lungs to expel using normal techniques such as mucous production or coughing, and so they remain within the lining of the lung and over time cause inflammation which can lead to scarring; a key symptom of Silicosis.
There is currently no cure for Silicosis, although there are a range of treatments that can help to manage the symptoms. If these treatments are unsuccessful one option that remains in some cases is lung transplant surgery, but that is a very serious operation that will not be undertaken unless certain criteria are met. Considering the dangers of Silica have been known about for so many years, there is really no excuse for anyone to be exposed to enough of the dust to cause issues, yet every year many thousands of people die as a result of the condition.
