Silicosis is, thankfully, a rare condition in the UK. So much so that it isn’t a condition that many doctors would consider at first instance if you attend with chest or breathing problems.

For that reason we do come across cases where the individual has been misdiagnosed with similar conditions which can present with the very same symptoms and which look almost identical when looking at x-rays or CT scans.

The most common such condition that we encounter is one called sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is very difficult indeed to differentiate from silicosis at the diagnosis stage and it isn’t until the doctor is informed of past exposure to silica dust – be it cement, rock dust, stone dust or something of that nature – that the true nature of the condition can become apparent.
